Heritage sounds like something old. Unless you’re talking Heritage Events at Roaring Camp. Free All Summer Long.

Free Weekday Heritage Activities

Monday: Watch Roaring Camp’s Blacksmith make tools and ornamental ironwork from the coals of a real working forge. Demonstrations are free.

Tuesday: Learn about the effort that went into lighting up the darkness for past generations from our Candle Making Artisan. One free candle per guest.

Wednesday: See a real Old-Fashioned Printing Press in action and be amazed by the skill and artistry required of print makers in the past. Demonstrations are free

Thursday: I've been working on the Railroad Day. Take your turn at pumping our handcar for a ride back in time old track gang style. Later in the day meet one of our expert engineers for an informative talk about our unique geared steam locomotives. Handcar rides and presentations are free.

Friday: Roll up your sleeves and try your luck as a forty-niner at the Gold-Panning station. One, unlimited, free round of Gold-Panning per guest.

Weekend Living History

Celebrate the history of Roaring Camp with the Town Marshal or visit with costumed characters from the Santa Cruz Mountains’ storied past that will be strolling the streets of the town.

On the weekends, Candle Making is $3 and Gold Panning is $1 to try your luck and $5 for guaranteed gold. You can also choose to dig in at the Chuckwagon BBQ, prices vary.



Kids Fare


Monday - Friday, excluding special event dates July 4, July 31, August 1-2

You’ll never outgrow the kid inside. That’s why everyone rides for the Kids Fare. WEEKDAYS AFTER 2PM.

Great Train Robberies


Witness shootouts between famed lawmen and notorious outlaws from the 1880’s aboard the Redwood Forest Train to Bear Mountain. See why the West was wild!

The train robbery will occur on all RC Steam Train departures. Those “sensitive to noise” may want to consider our SCBT train to the beach.



4th of July Family Fun Events


Bring out the entire family and friends for a fun-filled day of games, live music and an all-American barbecue. See why the west was wild aboard our Redwood Forest Steam Train as you witness shootouts between famed lawmen and notorious outlaws during our Great Train Robbery.

*The train robbery will occur on all Roaring Camp Steam Train Departures. Those sensitive to noise may want to consider our Santa Cruz Train to the Beach. Earplugs will be available at the ticket office.



Spaghetti Western Dinner and Movie


Wrangle the whole family and come on up for our inaugural Spaghetti Western Dinner and Movie night!

Event opens at 5:00 PM. Dinner will be served at 5:30 PM at the Roaring Camp BBQ area. Piles of spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread to warm the belly for the evening movie.

Steam train departs for a ride through the redwood forest at 6:30 PM for a one hour and 15 minute ride to the top of Bear Mountain and back. Then grab a seat and settle in for a good ole' family western comedy, the "Shakiest Gun in the West" from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM at our main BBQ area. Popcorn, smores and beverages will be available for purchase. Bring yer blanket and whatever else you need to make yourself cozy under the stars.

The Moonlight Train Dinner Party


Treat yourself to an evening of fun and relaxation at Roaring Camp's Moonlight Steam Train Dinner Party. Start with a hearty barbecue chicken and steak dinner followed by a leisurely train ride aboard vintage railway cars. The steam train stops atop Bear Mountain to a glowing campfire, hot cider and musical entertainment. Upon returning to Roaring Camp, hot apple pie and line dancing await you. Get into the swing of things with our line dance instructor Wendy, then two-step the rest of night away under the stars. Vegetarian options available.

The event runs from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Santa Cruz Starlight Evening Dinner and Train


Evening train and dinner excursion departs from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk at 5:30 pm and travels along the San Lorenzo River through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park to Roaring Camp. Upon arrival, a delicious chicken and steak dinner awaits you. After dinner, get up and move to Wild and Blue, a dance-able americana and country rock band. On the return trip to Santa Cruz, the train ride brings the forest to life with dazzling color and light. The evening event is four hours, returning to the Boardwalk at 9:30pm.

Brewgrass Festival


Don’t miss our inaugural BREWGRASS event featuring 12 local breweries, music from favorite bluegrass artists and food from our popular local food trucks.

Children are welcome!

The event will take place from 11:30am - 8pm, festival gates open at 11am. There is plenty of on-site parking. Don't want to drive? See details below for our VIP Brewgrass Tasting Train that runs from Santa Cruz to Felton.

Pints are $7 and tastings are $10 for four 5oz pours. You will receive four tickets for tastings that can be used at any of the beer booths to taste any of their offerings. Cups used are eco-friendly and compostable.

VIP Brewgrass Tasting Train:
$75 includes beer tasting for one hour provided by Humble Sea Brewing & Alvarado St. Brewery, live music, talks by your local brewer, as well as your festival ticket and back gate access into the festival. Train leaves from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk at 11am and returns at 8pm from Roaring Camp to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Harvest Faire & Steam Festival


Step into the incredible world of steam power at the Harvest Faire & Steam Festival presented by Kinetic Steam Works and Roaring Camp Railroads. Welcome Fall with heritage children's activities like scarecrow making, pumpkin patch picking, candle making and gold panning. Behold a variety of steam and belt-powered equipment on display. Admission is FREE for the whole family October 5 - 6 and children with a Steam Train ticket get to pick out a free pumpkin from our Harvest Pumpkin Patch on Bear Mountain.

Harvest & Steam themed activities include 'Make & Take' Scarecrows, Blacksmith and Print Shop demonstrations, gold panning, candle making and much more.



Thomas and Percy's Halloween Party™

Little engineers won’t believe their eyes—or their ears! Percy will be joining Thomas the Tank Engine on the rails! Also, Thomas the Tank Engine™ will be able to talk to his fans!

Dress up for Halloween with favorites Thomas™ and Percy™, for a 20 minute train ride, entertainment, and fun filled activities for the entire family. Activities include: Temporary Tattoos, Face Painting, Story Telling, Videos, Train Play Tables, Pick a Pumpkin (small pumpkins for little ones), Cookie decorating, photos with Sir Topham Hatt, Thomas store and entertainment.

Chanukah Train


Share the Light of Chanukah Aboard Roaring Camp Railroad’s New Chanukah Train!

Gather at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for the lighting of the menorah at 6:15 pm, and then set off on an incredible 1-hour train ride on Roaring Camp’s vintage excursion cars adorned with thousands of shining lights and Chanukah decorations.

We’ll share in Chanukah traditions and ride the train through the streets of Santa Cruz listening to Chanukah stories, playing dreidel and enjoying kosher refreshments provided by Chabad by the Sea. Continue the merriment with a $6 MyBoardwalk card good for attractions, arcade and games in Neptune's Kingdom.

Create a new holiday tradition with family and friends as we experience the lights, stories and traditions of Chanukah in a whole new way! Tickets are $33 adult, and $27 children.

Holiday Tree Walk

NOVEMBER 29 - 30, DECEMBER 1 & 7 - 8

Get in the holiday spirit by bringing family and friends to ride Roaring Camp’s daytime steam train to Bear Mountain. At the summit, guests may sip hot cider and delight in viewing a tree-lined walk of beautifully decorated holiday trees. Trees are provided by Patchen California Christmas Tree Farm, Los Gatos.

To add to the festive spirit and bring hope to families in need, visitors may bring a new and unwrapped toy to Roaring Camp’s depot to benefit Santa Cruz County’s Toys for Tots campaign.

Toys collected will be distributed to children who otherwise would have less. For each donated toy, Roaring Camp will deduct $2 per train ticket, purchased in person only. Guests are requested to avoid donating toys of aggression or unpacked stuffed animals.

Santa Cruz Holiday Lights Train

NOVEMBER 29 - 30, DECEMBER 7 - 8, 14 - 15, 20 - 23

Departs from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

A seasonal tradition returns to Santa Cruz with the Santa Cruz Holiday Lights Train. Vintage excursion cars, adorned with thousands of colorful lights, roll through city streets past homes of Santa Cruz. Revelers on board join in a holiday sing-along, sip hot-spiced cider, listen to musical entertainment, and enjoy a visit from Santa.

The merriment continues at Santa’s Kingdom at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Ticket holders have a choice of one activity: “Holiday” miniature golf, laser tag, or arcade games. The activity ticket is included with the Holiday Lights Train ticket price.

Rainforest Weekends


Learn about California's own Coastal Redwood Forest, aboard a 100 year old steam train. Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains just a few miles from the ocean, the forest flourishes in moderate temperatures and a year-round water supply provided by the Pacific systems and dense fog. Along the journey, hear fascinating information about the coastal redwoods and their ecosystems from docent specialists. This train departs from Roaring Camp in Felton.

This weekends docent specialists will be from the following organizations:

Mountain Parks Foundation:

Mountain Parks Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established in 1973 as one of the first three California State Park Cooperating Associations. It has been recognized as a model organization for its professional board members, talented staff and dedicated volunteers, all of whom work in partnership with California State Parks to provide funding for multi-faceted visitor enrichment and education programs.

Mountain Parks Foundation supports the nature education and enrichment programs offered at Henry Cowell and Big Basin Redwoods State Parks. They believe an informed public will ensure the preservation of the natural habitats and cultural history of our California State Parks.

Interpretive and educational programs funded by Mountain Parks Foundation serve more than 1.5 million park visitors annually, including more than 200 student classes who participate in on-site curriculum-based educational programs.

Model Railroad Exhibit

APRIL 6 - 7


Kids can’t get enough of these tiny trains, broccoli size trees and little red cabooses. Watch your child’s face light up as they play engineer chugging through the Redwoods, around railroad bends and over the Santa Cruz Mountains to the Boardwalk with the miniature scale of the Central Coast spread out before them.

Once the Model Railroad Exhibit feeds their imagination, the “Real Trains” will be waiting outside to transform imagination into reality. Join us for a special day on the railway.



Eggstraordinary Easter Egg Hunt

Hop on Board! The Easter Bunny makes a stop at Roaring Camp. After riding Roaring Camp's real 1880s Steam Train under the majestic Redwoods, over Indian Creek Trestle and through the Santa Cruz Mountains, your kids are going to have the time of their lives scavenging for chocolate eggs at the top of Bear Mountain.

The magic of trains, mixed with the magic of the Easter Bunny. It’s... it’s… EGGSTRAORDINARY!

Egg Hunt available for Easter Steam Train only. There is no Easter Egg Hunt on the Beach Train.

38th Annual Civil War Battles & Encampment

MAY 25 - 27

Travel back in time to the Civil War where encampments of Union and Confederate soldiers re-make history right before your eyes. Experience the sights and sounds of cavalry charges, musket fire and artillery shells in one of the longest-running historic reenactments in the West.

Ride an 1880s "iron horse" through an ancient redwood forest and witness skirmishes as the steam train ascends Bear Mountain. Glimpse a soldier’s daily life as he cooks meals over a campfire, cleans his musket and prepares for the day’s campaign. Then chow down on a Chuck Wagon Barbecue and take in the camp. See you at Roaring Camp for this fun family event on Memorial Day Weekend!

Night in the Encampments

May 26

See the event as never before as night falls across the encampments. Tents glow like lanterns, while soldiers huddle around their campfires. Ladies in beautiful gowns head to the ball to waltz the night away.

Night events begin at 6:30 PM with heritage activities, gift shop and special menu at Georgie's Cookhouse. At 8 PM board a steam train for a 90 minute ride through the redwoods and return to see the Grand Ball at Bret Harte Hall. Evening events wrap up at 10 PM.

Redwood Mountain Faire

JUNE 1 - 2

Music lovers, arts/crafts aficionados, and people of all ages will enjoy this remarkable festival. The annual Redwood Mountain Faire brings together a wide range of music styles on two stages, with juried fine art and crafts, exciting children’s activities, and excellent food and beverages, including local micro-brews and wines. The Faire benefits a wide range of nonprofit and service organizations and is organized by the Valley Women's Club of the San Lorenzo Valley.




Father's Day — Hats Off to Dad Steam Train


Salute Dad on Father's Day by treating him to a ride on a steam train and lunch. Is there anything better than BBQ & Beer? Spicy chicken wings, specialty sausages, tri-tip sandwiches, and lots more will be available at the Chuckwagon BBQ. In addition, Santa Cruz’s Humble Sea Brewing Company and Cider from Santa Cruz Scrumpy Cider will be pouring the best local brew at Roaring Camp. Dad will receive a complimentary engineer's cap with the purchase of a train ticket and any BBQ platter meal. All dads will be entered into a drawing to ride up front with the engineer!

BBQ, Humble Sea Brewing Company, and the Santa Cruz Scrumpy Cider booths will be open from 12 PM - 3 PM at Roaring Camp Railroads.

Father's Day — Beach Brew Train



Take a trip from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk to Roaring Camp Railroads on the Father's Day Beach Brew Train! Enjoy a live band while Humble Sea Brewing Company and Shanty Shack pour tastes of some of their favorite beers as you ride the rails from the seas to the trees.

Once you arrive at Roaring Camp join in on the festivities with live music, gold panning and a great BBQ and more beer for sale by the Santa Cruz Famous Humble Sea Brewing Company, and Cider from Santa Cruz Scrumpy Cider.

All railroad excursions are roundtrip.
